Unit 4 - Whorf's Linguistic Determinism
Since I am learning and planning to learn more languages, Whorf's Linguistic Determinism could help me understand the culture of the people as well as their language and determination. Whorf's theory claims that (for example) a country who's language has 10 words that mean peace versus no words the mean war, will most likely find a peaceful way to work things. One could add onto this with the fictional people in Game of Thrones, the Dothraki, have no word(s) for "thank you" and we can clearly see that they are a violent people. By remembering this theory of words, it can be kept in the back of someone's mind as they're looking into a new culture and, or, language. Whorf's Linguistic Determinism was very interesting, and applied to many places and subjects, so it appears important to me, especially when applied to a linguistic's field.
